Social Media Around the World Has No Doubt: A New Pogačar Has Arrived

Jakob Omrzel could hardly believe what he had achieved. The 20-year-old Slovenian produced an exceptional stage win at the Vuelta a España, keeping Slovenia’s story in the race alive even after Tadej Pogačar’s withdrawal.

Miha Hočevar, speaking in Delo’s studio with Nejc Grilc, said the victory was remarkable not only because Omrzel won, but because of the way he did it. “We saw something extraordinary. Not just a victory, but the kind of victory it was. The boy rode away in the style of Tadej Pogačar, although he does not like the comparisons, but he brought them on himself,” Hočevar said.

Hočevar praised Omrzel’s ride on the final climb to Calar Alto. Despite spending the entire day in the breakaway, the young Slovenian climbed at almost the same pace as the leading riders in the overall standings.

Based on what he saw, Hočevar believes this will not be Omrzel’s last major achievement. Meanwhile, Primož Roglič remains close enough to Enric Mas to stay in contention for the red jersey.
