Solar saves Germany 20 billion euros in energy imports since 2020

Germany's embrace of solar energy has yielded substantial economic advantages, with the sector replacing approximately 20 billion euros in fossil fuel imports since 2020, according to industry association BSW-Solar. The calculations show that nearly 390 billion kilowatt-hours of solar electricity were generated by around six million solar installations between 2020 and 2025.

This significant output of solar power has not only reduced Germany's reliance on imported fossil fuels but also contributed to climate protection. The Federal Environment Agency estimates that the use of solar power in Germany has prevented about 500 million tons of greenhouse gases over the past 20 years. A considerable portion of this, 270 million tons, was avoided between 2020 and 2025 alone.

The German solar and storage industry is a robust economic player, employing approximately 120,000 individuals and achieving an annual turnover of about 30 billion euros. BSW-Solar advocates for the consistent expansion of solar and storage technologies to further enhance these benefits and secure Germany's energy future.
