Somali referee Omar Artan calls UEFA Super Cup his 'World Cup' after US entry denial

Salzburg, Austria – Somali international referee Omar Artan described officiating the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa as his "World Cup," a poignant moment after being denied entry to the United States for the FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old referee was unexpectedly turned away at Miami International Airport, despite his selection for the World Cup panel. A US State Department official cited "association with suspected members of terrorist organizations" as the reason for his ineligibility, allegations that Artan has vehemently rejected. The incident sparked outrage in Somalia, where he was celebrated as a hero upon his return.

UEFA extended an invitation to Artan to officiate the Super Cup match, which PSG won 2-1, as a gesture of support. He shared his feelings on X, writing "This was my World Cup" on a match ball, a sentiment echoed by UEFA's post celebrating his "special Super Cup souvenir."

Artan expressed his gratitude on Instagram, thanking UEFA for the trust and opportunity, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for their support. UEFA's decision to appoint him is seen partly as a political move, strengthening its cooperation with CAF and reflecting ongoing tensions between UEFA and FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the governance of international football.
