Some Accused Suspected of Plotting Sabotage, Prosecutor Says

International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam says some accused people have been moving suspiciously, raising fears that they could attempt sabotage or other disruptive activities. He said intelligence information prompted the warning and that tribunal security had been tightened inside and outside the premises.

“If anyone tries any such misconduct, it will be suicidal for them,” Aminul told reporters at his office. He said the accused were being escorted by police wearing handcuffs, vests and helmets, while security personnel at the tribunal had been alerted and activity was being closely monitored.

The warning came as investigators began formally recording statements from families of 251 victims of enforced disappearance. They recorded statements from 55 family members at the chief prosecutor’s office, with the remaining families scheduled to give statements the following day.

Aminul said investigators had identified many alleged perpetrators and locations linked to the incidents, although he declined to provide details. Some serving and retired officers could have links to the cases, he said. The prosecution considers the disappearances “widespread and systematic” crimes against humanity because they followed similar patterns, including alleged involvement by law enforcement agencies and later denials that victims were in custody.

Aminul said the investigation could be completed within the year.
