Somos México demands public report on UNAM irregularities amid student trust crisis

The student organization "Somos México" has called on the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to publicly disclose all information concerning irregularities detected in its 2026-2027 undergraduate admissions process. The group also demands a thorough review of the university's admission mechanisms, viewing the temporary suspension of enrollments as a sign of a significant crisis of confidence in the institution's system.

In a statement, "Somos México" highlighted that the integrity of the admission process is at stake, not just the resolution of potential fraud cases. This process is the primary gateway to public higher education for thousands of young Mexicans. Over 158,700 applicants participated in the admission process, with 21,962 students accepted and preparing for enrollment starting July 27, in addition to those admitted through regular pathways.

"Somos México" warned that with the academic year scheduled to begin on August 10, thousands of students and their families face uncertainty about their academic futures. They are dealing with expenses, relocation, housing contracts, and other personal decisions that hinge on the university's institutional resolution. The emergence of suspected fraud, potentially involving technological tools and artificial intelligence, compels university authorities to act decisively to protect the rights of those who adhered to the established rules.

The organization stressed that students who followed the rules should not bear the consequences of failures in the supervision mechanisms. While acknowledging the UNAM's decision to conduct a deep review of the irregularities, "Somos México" asserted that the process's legitimacy depends on absolute transparency, technical rigor, independence, and adherence to principles of legality, ethics, equal opportunity, and accountability. The UNAM's response must match its decades-long reputation for academic excellence, integrity, and commitment to knowledge, respecting its autonomy.
