Sonam Wangchuk's Wife Demands Consent for His Medical Treatment Amid Hospitalization

Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, has asserted her right to consent for any medical treatment administered to her husband. Wangchuk was moved to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.

Nothing should be administered to him orally or intravenous without take consent from me, his family and his doctors who have been monitoring his health for the past 20 days.

Angmo stated, "Nothing should be administered to him orally or intravenous without take consent from me, his family and his doctors who have been monitoring his health for the past 20 days." She emphasized her right under Article 32 and declared she would hold everyone accountable if anything were to happen to him without her approval.

I forbid them from administering anything without my consent. No treatment should start without my consent. I hold everybody accountable if anything happens.

The Delhi Police, however, reported that Wangchuk was shifted for "essential medical care" following expert medical advice and in compliance with Delhi High Court directions due to his deteriorating health. They also mentioned that protestors caused a slight commotion while police complied with the court orders, urging protestors to vacate the site peacefully.

As per orders of Hon’ble High Court and on expert medical advise due to the deteriorating health condition of Sh. Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care.

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das alleged that the police misinterpreted the court's order, calling Wangchuk's hospitalization a contempt of court. He argued that Wangchuk's health was stable and monitored by their medical team, and that the police action was an unjustified detention.

The Delhi High Court directed that the health of Sonam Wangchuk should be monitored and any intervention should only take place if his health deteriorates. His health is monitored by our medical team 2-3 times a day and he himself posts videos on a daily basis giving update about his health which has been stable. The Delhi police has misinterpreted that court order and in the guise of that order detained him. The detention is a contempt of court’s order.
