Song Young-gil, Chung Jin-suk, Kim Min-seok begin tour of convention polls; early trends to emerge

South Korea's Democratic Party is commencing its series of regional conventions on August 1st in the Chungcheong region, a crucial step in electing a new party leader ahead of the August 17th national convention. This event in Chungcheong (including South Chungcheong, North Chungcheong, Daejeon, and Sejong) is the first of its kind, where candidates Song Young-gil, Chung Jin-suk, and Kim Min-seok will present their platforms to party members.

The conventions are designed to allow candidates to connect with party members across different regions. Following the Chungcheong convention, the party will hold similar events in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam on August 2nd. Subsequent regional conventions are scheduled for Jeju, Incheon, Gangwon, Daegu, North Gyeongnam, Honam, Gyeonggi, and Seoul through mid-August.

Initial online voting results for the Chungcheong region have shown a notable increase in participation compared to the previous year. Daejeon recorded a 35.97% turnout, Sejong 41.42%, North Chungcheong 31.02%, and South Chungcheong 29.63%. This higher engagement suggests a strong interest among party members in the upcoming leadership election.

The final results will be determined by a combination of delegate and party member votes (70%) and public opinion surveys (30%), with the new leader to be announced at the national convention on August 17th. The regional conventions serve as an important indicator of the early dynamics and potential outcomes of the leadership race.
