Sony FX5 cinema camera debuts with Open Gate and image stabilization

Sony is set to redefine the full-frame cinema camera market with the introduction of its new FX5 model. This latest addition to the Cinema Line series is equipped with a newly developed full-frame back-illuminated stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor and an AI-integrated BIONZ XR2 processor. The camera promises over 15 stops of dynamic range and features three base ISOs (800/4000/12800) along with a Dual Gain shooting mode to optimize performance and image quality.

A significant advancement in the FX series, the FX5 marks the first model to support 3:2 Open Gate shooting and internal X-OCN RAW recording. This capability greatly expands post-production options and improves transfer efficiency for professional workflows. The camera is designed with a compact, flat-top body and incorporates a five-axis optical image stabilization system, ensuring stable and smooth footage even during handheld shooting.

Further enhancing its creative potential, the FX5 includes AI-based subject recognition, automatic white balance tracking (ATW), and a de-squeeze display for anamorphic lenses. It also features a 3.5-inch, 16:9 touch-sensitive LCD screen with four-axis multi-angle adjustment. Sony has also improved the camera's cooling structure with an efficient fan, aiming to provide a superior and more convenient experience for filmmakers. The FX5 is available for pre-order starting today at Sony Stores in Taiwan, with a retail price of NT$144,980, and is scheduled for official release on August 12.
