Sookmyung Women's University Presents Future Research Vision at 2026 Korea-US Science Conference

Sookmyung Women's University (President Moon Sook-young) participated in the 2026 Korea-US Science and Technology Conference (UKC 2026) held in Orlando, Florida, from August 5-8. The university showcased its future research vision as it celebrates its 120th anniversary, engaging in activities to expand global research collaboration and attract top researchers.

On August 7, Sookmyung Women's University hosted a forum titled 'Proud Sookmyung, Beyond 120 Years: Future Research at Sookmyung Women's University.' This forum was organized to introduce the university's interdisciplinary research capabilities, spanning cutting-edge science and technology with humanities, to researchers worldwide.

Co-chaired by Sookmyung Women's University President Moon Sook-young and Yoon Hye-on, President of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Technology (WISET), the forum featured presentations detailing Sookmyung's key research areas and future strategies. President Moon stated, "Sookmyung Women's University is building a convergence research ecosystem where advanced engineering, life sciences, AI, and humanistic values connect without boundaries. We will expand global cooperation with top universities and research institutions worldwide to become a leading global research hub beyond Asia."

Because the speed of AI technology development is so fast, it is difficult to respond to changes with regulations and systems once they are established. A flexible and adaptive governance system is needed that can continuously follow technological changes and adjust as needed.

Presentations highlighted Sookmyung's research achievements and future development directions, including 'Proud Sookmyung, Beyond 120 Years: Sookmyung Women's University's 120-Year Challenge History' by Head of Research Im Ho-sun, 'New Drug Development for Healthy Aging' by Director of the Pharmaceutical Research Institute Jang Chang-young, 'History and Key Achievements of Sookmyung Women's University's Women's Health Research Institute' by Director Yang Young, and 'Achievements of 10 Years in Nurturing Female Engineering Talent and Future Tasks for the Next Decade' by Professor Park Jun-dong of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

President Moon also participated as a panelist in the 'University Leadership Forum,' discussing the transformation and response strategies of universities in the era of AI with leaders from major Korean and US universities and institutions. She stressed the need for flexible and adaptive governance systems capable of keeping pace with rapid technological changes and emphasized that universities must evolve beyond knowledge acquisition to become spaces where students gain experience, judgment, and creativity through direct interaction with people and society.

AI can quickly compress and deliver vast knowledge, but it cannot compress experience. In the future, universities must become places of experience where students directly experience people, fields, and society, and develop judgment and creativity through this.
