Sophie Straat's 'White Men' Remark Not Punishable, Dutch Prosecutors Rule

A controversial statement made by Dutch singer Sophie Straat during a music festival has been deemed not punishable by the Dutch Public Prosecution Service. Straat's remark, "all white men to the back," was made during her performance at the Best Kept Secret festival on June 14.

She repeated the call a month later at the Gentse Feesten in Belgium. Straat stated that her intention was to create space for women, queer individuals, and people of color. The statements sparked significant outrage in both the Netherlands and Belgium, leading to legal complaints being filed.

In the Netherlands, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reviewed these complaints. The OM concluded that Straat's statement is not punishable, interpreting it as a symbolic or activist call for inclusion. According to the Dutch public broadcaster NOS, the OM stated that Straat was asking white men to voluntarily make room for other groups to participate, particularly in the context of a mosh pit at a concert where audience members often form a circle near the stage.

This ruling aligns with earlier assessments by the equal opportunities center Unia and the Dutch National Reporting Point for Discrimination, both of which had previously concluded that Straat's statements did not constitute discrimination. The OM views the remarks, in conjunction with her other performances, as a symbolic effort to draw attention to inclusion and temporarily invert existing societal power dynamics.
