Sosnowiec Park to Be Named After Late Lawmaker Łukasz Litewka

A park currently under development in Sosnowiec will be named in memory of Łukasz Litewka, a 36-year-old Polish lawmaker who tragically died in April. The announcement was made by the city's mayor, Arkadiusz Chęciński, who confirmed that the initiative had been consulted with and received the support of Litewka's parents.

The park is planned for a 3.7-hectare site situated between Białostocka and Lenartowicza streets, adjacent to a tram line that began operation in late 2022. A central feature of the park's design will be an urban orchard filled with fruit trees, complemented by flower meadows in the central sections.

Additionally, the plans include the construction of walking paths, a 1.3-kilometer circular route for rollerblading, and dedicated zones for relaxation and recreation. Litewka, known for his extensive charitable and social work, tragically died on April 23 after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

His foundation, TeamLitewka, was active in raising awareness and funds for children's medical treatments and animal rescue efforts through social media. The foundation also responded to local community needs by collecting resources for rehabilitation equipment and aid for accident victims. Litewka was also the originator of the nationwide campaign "Zwierzogranie," aimed at supporting animal shelters and combating animal homelessness.

The driver of the car involved in the accident, a 57-year-old man, faces charges of causing a fatal traffic accident, with a potential sentence of six months to eight years in prison. Prosecutors allege he unintentionally violated traffic rules, leading to the cyclist's death. The driver was released on bail, and an appeal by the prosecution seeking his arrest was not granted by the District Court in Sosnowiec.
