Soueast S08 i-DM tested in Mexico's fuel economy challenge

The new Soueast S08 i-DM plug-in hybrid has arrived in Mexico, and its capabilities were put to the test in an unconventional driving competition focused on fuel efficiency rather than speed.

Participants in the event, which covered approximately 280 km from Mexico City to Valle de Bravo, were challenged to complete the journey using minimal fuel and without recharging the battery or refueling. The strategy involved more than just driving slowly; participants actively reduced unnecessary electrical consumption, such as turning off the air conditioning and dimming the infotainment screen. A key technique involved strategically using the vehicle's three levels of regenerative braking to recapture energy on declines and coasting on straights.

Despite the focus on economy, the S08 i-DM demonstrated its performance potential. Equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine paired with an electric motor, it delivers a combined 342 hp and 388 lb-ft of torque. Its 18.4 kWh battery allows for an estimated electric-only range of up to 85 km under the WLTC cycle.

During the return journey, drivers were able to experience the vehicle's performance more conventionally. The hybrid system provides ample power for high-speed driving, and the cabin's sound insulation creates a quiet environment, sometimes masking the actual speed. While the vehicle's size and weight are noticeable during spirited cornering, it maintains stability. The steering and suspension are adjustable, contributing to a comfortable and secure ride despite road imperfections.
