Sound Dance Company's new work 'Patience' generates buzz ahead of premiere

Changhua County's acclaimed "Sound Dance Company" is set to unveil its latest creation, "Patience," a significant work marking the company's 10th anniversary. The premiere is scheduled for August 15th and 16th at the Changhua City Farmers' Association Granary, promising an international-caliber contemporary dance experience for Taiwanese audiences.

Central to this production is the collaboration with renowned international choreographer Malou Airaudo. A former key dancer with the legendary German choreographer Pina Bausch's company, Airaudo has spent time in residence in Changhua, immersing herself in the local environment to inspire the choreography. This cross-cultural and international partnership aims to bring a unique artistic interpretation to the stage.

"Patience" is described as more than just a stage performance; it represents an artistic transformation born from the choreographer's deep engagement with the land of Changhua. The company recently offered a glimpse into its creative process with a private rehearsal sharing session on July 31st. This event, limited to 20 participants, sold out immediately, highlighting the strong anticipation for the new work.

In the rehearsal room, no one knows what will happen in the next second, including the choreographer, the dancers, and even myself. We can only rely on mutual trust, step by step, to accompany the work as it grows into its own form.

Unlike typical promotional events, the sharing session focused on the journey of creation. Attendees witnessed firsthand the dynamic between Airaudo and the dancers as they explored, communicated, and refined movements to build the piece. The session showcased approximately 40 minutes of rehearsal content, allowing the audience to feel the raw energy and rhythm of the work's development.

Artistic Director Wu Si-wei emphasized the collaborative and exploratory nature of the rehearsal room, describing it as a "private and unknown space" where the next moment is uncertain, even for the choreographer and dancers. He believes that trust and a gradual process are essential for a masterpiece to emerge. The upcoming performances at the historic Changhua City Farmers' Association Granary are expected to be a significant cultural event, blending international expertise with local sentiment.
