South Africa coach Hugo Broos retires after leading team to World Cup qualification

Hugo Broos, the Belgian coach who masterminded South Africa's qualification for the 2026 World Cup, is stepping down from football.

Broos, 74, led South Africa to a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea in a crucial group stage match, securing their place in the tournament for the first time in 24 years. This achievement also made him the oldest coach to win a World Cup match at 74 years and 75 days old.

His tenure with South Africa, which began in May 2021, also saw the team secure third place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite these successes, South Africa was eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing to co-host Canada.

Following his impressive performance, the South African Football Association offered Broos a one-year contract extension through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. However, Broos has opted to retire, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
