South Africa finish strongly to take 2-1 series lead against All Blacks

South Africa’s set-piece power eventually overwhelmed New Zealand in Soweto, giving the world champions a 2-1 lead in the closely fought Greatest Rivalry series.

The teams traded two tries each in a tense first half. New Zealand’s composure and attacking ambition repeatedly stretched South Africa’s defensive line, and the All Blacks took the lead when Will Jordan followed his own kick to score in the 55th minute.

South Africa responded quickly. Jesse Kriel broke through Leroy Carter to score, and Malcolm Marx then crossed at the back of a powerful maul. A penalty from Sacha Feinberg Mngomezulu gave the hosts valuable room.

New Zealand remained in the contest until the final play, when Samisoni Taukei’aho scored a try. It narrowed the margin but could not prevent South Africa from winning 29-24. The fourth and final Test will take place in Baltimore next weekend, with New Zealand trying to force a drawn series after winning the opening match.
