South American football President pushes for 64-team World Cup in 2030

South American football's governing body, CONMEBOL, is actively pushing for a significant expansion of the 2030 World Cup, proposing a record 64 teams. This push comes merely a day after the conclusion of the inaugural 48-team tournament held in North America.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez took to social media to urge FIFA to consider the larger format for the centenary edition of the prestigious tournament. "The next one is at home! In 2030, the World Cup is coming to Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay," Dominguez wrote. "It will be a great opportunity for football, to celebrate the World Cup's centenary with a 64-team tournament."

The 2030 World Cup is already set to be a landmark event, with Spain, Portugal, and Morocco designated as the primary co-hosts. To commemorate 100 years since the first World Cup in 1930, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the opening matches, honoring the tournament's origins in Uruguay.
