South American Lizard, Relative of Iguana, Suspected of Invading Hualien's Qixingtan

A potential ecological threat has emerged at Hualien's Qixingtan, with a citizen reporting the discovery of a large lizard suspected to be a non-native species from South America. The reptile, identified by the Taiwan Reptile Animal Rescue Association as likely a Collared Lizard, shares a relation with the invasive green iguana.

Association chairman You Chong-wei suggests the lizard may have arrived in Taiwan hidden within imported stone materials processed in the nearby Meilun Industrial Park. This possibility raises concerns about the effectiveness of current import inspection protocols and the potential for further introductions of foreign species.

The lizard, measuring about 30 cm with its tail, exhibits distinct features like a black neck band and ridged scales, characteristic of the Collared Lizard. While common in its native Brazil, its presence in Taiwan is unprecedented, with no prior records of this species. The association is working with local volunteers to capture the animal and investigate further.

Given the Collared Lizard's rapid breeding rate, the association is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any further sightings. The hope is that this is an isolated incident, but the potential for an established population underscores the ongoing challenges of managing invasive species in Taiwan's delicate ecosystems.
