South Korea Battles Intense Heatwave, Tropical Nights; Rain Offers Partial Relief in Some Areas

Much of South Korea is sweltering under a severe heatwave, with peak perceived temperatures expected to reach around 33 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The situation is particularly extreme in the southeastern coastal areas of Gyeongbuk, where the perceived temperature could soar above 38 degrees Celsius, prompting a heatwave warning.

Tropical nights, where temperatures remain above 25 degrees Celsius overnight, are also widespread, adding to the discomfort. However, some respite is expected in the northern regions, with rain forecast for the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province.

While these areas may see some relief, the rainfall is expected to be intermittent, with many regions experiencing only brief periods of rain. The forecast indicates rainfall amounts ranging from 20 to 60 millimeters in the northern Seoul area and West Sea islands, and 5 to 40 millimeters in other parts of the capital region and Gangwon.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution. Areas experiencing rain or showers may face reduced visibility and slippery roads, increasing the risk of traffic and safety accidents. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusts of wind are also possible in regions affected by showers.
