The forecast paints a concerning picture, suggesting that the mercury will climb significantly higher than average, with a 90% probability of temperatures being above or similar to normal levels. This outlook is largely attributed to anomalously high sea surface temperatures in the Northwest Pacific and North Indian Oceans, which are feeding into a stronger subtropical high-pressure system over the Korean Peninsula.

This atmospheric setup means that the region can expect not only scorching daytime temperatures but also high humidity, creating a stifling "steaming pot" effect. Compounding the heatwave concerns is the prediction of increased rainfall. The KMA anticipates that precipitation levels in June and July will generally be higher than average. This is due to increased water vapor supply from the warmer oceans, potentially leading to widespread monsoon rains as well as more frequent and intense "guerrilla downpours" – sudden, localized heavy rainfall events. Warmer seas surrounding the peninsula also mean that nighttime temperatures are less likely to drop significantly, exacerbating the impact of the heat.

The KMA is taking these forecasts seriously, acknowledging the potential for significant damage from these extreme weather conditions. The agency has announced plans to introduce new emergency alert systems, including warnings for severe heatwaves and tropical nights. This proactive approach reflects a growing concern about the "tropicalization" of Korea's climate, a trend driven by global warming.
