South Korea Expands Child Allowance to Age 8, Includes Retroactive Payments

The South Korean government has announced a significant expansion of its child allowance program, raising the age limit from under 8 to under 9 years old. This change, effective immediately, means that children who have already had their birthdays in 2024 and missed out on the allowance for January through March will receive those payments retroactively.

This expansion is part of a phased approach, with the government planning to increase the age limit by one year annually until 2030, when children under 13 will be eligible. Furthermore, the program includes additional financial support for families residing outside the Seoul metropolitan area, with specific bonus amounts designated for children in depopulated or specially designated regions, reflecting a commitment to regional development and support for families outside major urban centers.

In a move to ease the administrative burden on families, the retroactive payments will be processed automatically without requiring a separate application. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has improved its payment system to ensure that approximately 430,000 children receive their missed allowances, totaling 168.7 billion won. This initiative underscores the government's dedication to supporting child welfare and ensuring that eligible families receive the financial assistance they are due, even if administrative hurdles previously prevented it.
