South Korea expands nutrition education for children, calling it as important as core subjects

South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is intensifying efforts to cultivate balanced nutrition and healthy eating habits among children and adolescents. The ministry announced it will hold the "15th Food Safety and Nutrition Education Outstanding Case Awards Ceremony" to discover and promote excellent educational practices in schools.

Last year's event highlighted creative uses of the ministry's developed educational materials, including healthy snack creation and sugar content calculation, which engaged students and integrated well with various school subjects. This year, the ceremony will for the first time include educational cases utilizing digital media, reflecting the evolving landscape of education.

We will continue to reflect the diverse experiences and ideas from the education field in our food education policies and educational material development.

The competition is open to nutritionists and teachers from elementary, middle, high, and special schools nationwide. Applications, including case submissions, are being accepted via Naver Form until October 30. The evaluation process involves a written preliminary round and a final presentation round, assessing factors like participation, content validity, creativity, material utilization, and educational effectiveness.

Finalists will present their cases on November 13, with top selections receiving awards from the Minister of Food and Drug Safety. These award-winning cases will be disseminated through online channels like the ministry's "Food Safety Korea" and the Ministry of Education's "EduNet." They will also serve as training materials for educators, reinforcing the ministry's commitment to incorporating practical ideas from the field into future policies and educational resources. The ministry aims to continuously support initiatives that ensure children and adolescents can enjoy a safe and healthy food environment.
