South Korea Faces Intense Heatwave and Heavy Rainfall Warnings

South Korea is currently grappling with an intense heatwave, with the Korea Meteorological Administration issuing heatwave advisories across most of the country. Temperatures are soaring, with daytime highs expected to reach up to 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 F) on Saturday, August 8th. The oppressive heat is accompanied by persistent tropical nights, where nighttime temperatures fail to drop significantly.

Adding to the challenging weather, heavy and intense rainfall is predicted for the eastern coastal areas, particularly along the Gangwon and Gyeongbuk coasts. The forecast indicates that these regions could receive between 50 to 100 millimeters of rain, with some areas potentially experiencing over 150 millimeters on August 8th and 9th. This has raised the possibility of heavy rain warnings being issued.

Most regions across the country are under heatwave advisories, and it will be very hot for the time being, with many areas experiencing tropical nights.

Even though August 7th marked 'Ipsu,' the traditional start of autumn according to the lunar calendar, the sweltering conditions show no sign of abating. The forecast suggests that temperatures will remain higher than the seasonal average for the coming days. In addition to the eastern coast, other regions including the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong, Jeolla, and parts of Gyeongsang will experience scattered showers from Saturday afternoon into the evening.

While the rain may offer temporary relief in some areas, the high humidity is expected to keep the weather muggy even after the downpours cease. The meteorological agency advises that daytime temperatures will range from 26 to 37 degrees Celsius, with the highest perceived temperatures likely to hover around 35 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country. The forecast for rainfall amounts varies by region, with eastern coastal areas expecting the most significant precipitation, followed by inland areas and Jeju Island.
