South Korea raises fire risk alert to 'severe' amid record heatwave

South Korea's Fire Department has elevated the national fire risk alert to its highest level, 'severe,' as the country grapples with a relentless heatwave. The extreme temperatures, with a peak perceived temperature of around 35 degrees Celsius, significantly heighten the danger of fires, particularly from electrical equipment and cooling appliances.

The alert comes as fire incidents have seen a marked increase. The average daily number of fires rose by 19.4% in the first nine days of the month compared to the period from the 10th to the 27th of the previous month. This trend continued, with a further 15.9% increase in daily average fires from August 2nd to 4th compared to the preceding week.

In response, the Fire Department has activated an emergency duty system and is reinforcing preparedness nationwide. Public awareness campaigns are underway, utilizing broadcast messages and safety alerts to disseminate fire prevention tips. Fire chiefs are personally overseeing operations and equipment readiness. Officials urge the public to take precautions, such as unplugging unused electrical devices and clearing flammable materials around air conditioner units, to mitigate fire risks during this critical period.
