South Korea's logistics centers face safety concerns amid rapid growth and 'fast delivery' competition

A recent fire at a Coupang logistics center in Incheon has once again highlighted the safety vulnerabilities of South Korea's burgeoning logistics infrastructure. The ongoing firefighting efforts at the Coupang 32 logistics center underscore the inherent risks associated with these facilities, which are crucial for the nation's e-commerce boom.

The intense competition for rapid delivery services has led to logistics centers operating under constant pressure, often resulting in overcrowding. Compounding the fire risk is the storage of large quantities of flammable materials, including paper boxes and plastic packaging. The situation is further complicated by the increasing integration of automation, such as robots, which adds another layer of complexity to fire prevention and management.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's National Logistics Information Center, there are nearly 6,000 registered logistics warehouses across the country. Last year alone, 659 new facilities were added, with another 381 registered this year. The number of mega-sized logistics centers, covering over 10,000 square meters like the one that caught fire and the Coupang facility in Icheon that burned in 2021, stands at 745.

The expansion of logistics centers, particularly those operated by e-commerce giants like Coupang, is directly linked to the thriving online retail market. Coupang alone reportedly operates over 100 fulfillment centers and delivery stations nationwide. The recent incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced safety protocols and regulatory oversight in this rapidly expanding sector.
