South Korea's Nuri Rocket Set for 5th Launch Carrying Record 15 Satellites

South Korea's homegrown Nuri rocket is poised for its fifth launch on October 7th, carrying an unprecedented 15 satellites into orbit. This mission significantly surpasses the previous record of 13 satellites launched during the fourth flight, marking a major milestone in the country's space exploration endeavors.

The payload for this upcoming launch includes five cluster satellites, designated as small cluster satellites 2 through 6, along with ten CubeSats. These small cluster satellites are designed for Earth observation, utilizing a constellation of small satellites deployed simultaneously to capture imagery of the planet. This marks the first time South Korea will deploy multiple small satellites concurrently into orbit.

Preparations are underway at the Naro Space Center in Goheung, South Jeolla Province, where the Nuri rocket is being assembled. The five small cluster satellites arrived on August 24th for functional checks, and the ten CubeSats are expected by August 31st. Testing of the launchpad and tracking systems has already been completed, indicating readiness for the mission.

Oh Tae-seok, head of the Space Agency, highlighted the mission's significance. "The fifth launch is a mission that carries a record 15 satellites and will deploy cluster satellites into orbit for the first time domestically," he stated. "It will serve as an opportunity to advance the mission performance and space transport capabilities of Nuri by one level."

While the forecast for October 7th predicts favorable weather and space conditions with no predicted collisions with space debris, contingency plans are in place. October 8th to 14th have been designated as a reserve period to accommodate potential delays due to sudden weather changes or technical issues, ensuring the mission's success.
