South Korea’s women’s wheelchair fencing team wins first-ever World Cup team gold

South Korea’s women’s wheelchair fencing team has won the country’s first-ever World Cup team gold, defeating China 26-21 in the épée final in Pattaya, Thailand, on the second.

Kim Sun-mi, Kwon Hyo-kyung, Cho Eun-hye and Cho Ye-jin overcame China, one of the leading forces in world wheelchair fencing. The same four fencers also collected a bronze medal in the women’s foil team event on the same day.

We were able to achieve this valuable result because the athletes demonstrated their ability without wavering from the individual events through the team events.

South Korea added several individual medals. Cho Eun-hye won silver in women’s Category B sabre, while Lee Jin-sol took bronze in men’s Category B épée. Cho Ye-jin won bronze in women’s Category B foil, Kwon Hyo-kyung claimed bronze in women’s Category A épée, and Cho Eun-hye added another bronze in women’s Category B épée.

Coach Noh Ga-ram said the athletes maintained their performance from the individual events through the team competitions. “We were able to achieve this valuable result because the athletes demonstrated their ability without wavering from the individual events through the team events,” Noh said. “We will not be satisfied with this gold medal and will prepare to achieve good results at the Asian Para Games as well.” The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games are scheduled for October.
