South Korea supports Trump's North Korea dialogue but demands security assurances

South Korea has expressed its support for U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to re-engage in dialogue with North Korea. National Security Advisor Wi Sung-rak stated on the 28th that Seoul backs the initiative to restart talks, a move that comes amid shifting dynamics in inter-Korean relations.

However, South Korea has laid out specific conditions for its support. Wi Sung-rak emphasized that any renewed dialogue must focus on achieving tangible progress in denuclearizing North Korea. He stressed the importance of coordinating with the United States to ensure that these talks not only advance the nuclear issue but also contribute to establishing a lasting peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula.

Crucially, South Korea also seeks guarantees that its own security posture will not be weakened during these diplomatic efforts. Seoul is keen to avoid being marginalized in any U.S.-North Korea negotiations. Wi Sung-rak underscored that policy coordination and communication between Seoul and Washington are more critical than ever to navigate these sensitive discussions.

This stance comes after President Trump cited South Korea's refusal to assist in the Iran conflict as a reason for shortening joint military exercises with the U.S. Trump had also indicated his desire for a new summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. South Korea aims to deepen cooperation with the U.S. on various issues, including investment, security, intelligence sharing, and the eventual transfer of wartime operational control, even as these areas sometimes create friction between the allies.
