South Korea is grappling with a relentless heatwave, with most of the country experiencing temperatures that feel like an oven. On Sunday, July 26, the Korea Meteorological Administration issued a "heatwave special warning" for several southern regions, including Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province, and Goryeong, Pohang, and Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province. In these areas, the highest perceived temperature is expected to soar to 39 degrees Celsius or higher, a level considered life-threatening.

The nation is currently under the influence of a hot and humid subtropical high-pressure system. This system, combined with high humidity, intensifies the heat, leading to widespread heatwave advisories across the country. The high humidity prevents temperatures from dropping significantly even after sunset, resulting in tropical nights in most regions.

Authorities are urging residents in these extreme heat zones to immediately halt all outdoor activities and move to cool, safe locations, emphasizing the need to check on vulnerable individuals.

Daily high temperatures are expected to range from 29 to 37 degrees Celsius. While scattered showers are predicted for Sunday afternoon due to atmospheric instability, these will offer only temporary relief. Humidity will remain high, and temperatures are expected to rise again after the rain stops, prolonging the oppressive heat. Some areas, like Cheorwon in Gangwon Province, are also under a heavy rain advisory, raising concerns about potential flooding and landslides.
