South Korean court hears stalking case against woman accused of harassing actor Hwang Jung-min

A South Korean court is deliberating the case of a woman in her 40s accused of stalking actor Hwang Jung-min. Prosecutors have requested a fine of 10 million won (approximately $7,200 USD) for the defendant, identified only as 'A', who faces charges including violations of the Stalking Punishment Act.

The prosecution cited the extended duration of the alleged stalking, the excessive frequency of contact, and the posting of threatening messages on social media as reasons for their sentencing request. They also noted that the victim, Hwang Jung-min, has formally requested strict punishment for the accused.

During the trial, prosecutors had initially requested the proceedings be held privately to prevent secondary harm to the victim. However, the court, upholding the principle of open trials, denied this request while urging restraint regarding any discussion of private matters or potential secondary harm.

The defense argued that the communication between 'A' and Hwang Jung-min was not entirely one-sided. In her final statement, 'A' acknowledged some of her actions were wrong but maintained that she did not unilaterally stalk the actor. The case originated from Hwang Jung-min's complaint filed in August of the previous year. Initially, 'A' received a summary order for a 3 million won fine, but she appealed, leading to the current formal trial.

Adding another layer to the legal entanglement, 'A' has also filed a lawsuit seeking 200 million won in damages against Hwang Jung-min. This separate case has been referred for mediation, with a session scheduled for August 14.
