South Korean football club reps accused of embezzlement over Cancun trip

Nine representatives from South Korean professional football clubs face accusations of embezzlement and wasting taxpayer money. Civic groups, including the People's Economy Research Institute and Lawyers for Lawyers Inspecting Prosecutors, filed a complaint against them on Tuesday. The complaint alleges the representatives misused funds during a trip to Cancun, Mexico, for a K-League Academy-CEO course held from June 18-26.

The K-League organized the event during the 2026 World Cup, with 25 individuals, including club representatives and league officials, attending. The 701.7 million won (approximately $500,000) budget was split between the K-League and the individual clubs. Critics argue that the trip, which included attending World Cup matches and a two-day leisure stay in Cancun with sightseeing, constituted a wasteful use of public funds.

Specifically, nine representatives from city and provincial-run clubs are under scrutiny for opting for business class seats. The K-League had informed participants that choosing economy class would save approximately 6 million won per person. The price difference between a business class seat (15.924 million won) and an economy seat (9.995 million won) was over 5.92 million won per person. Civic groups contend that this expenditure violated the representatives' duty to manage the funds of publicly funded clubs responsibly.

Rep. Kim Jae-won of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party stated, "While budgets for players and youth development are insufficient, they spared no taxpayer money for club representatives' business class seats and stays in Cancun. This is not mere moral hazard but a serious matter of privately wasting public assets."
