South Korean Lawmaker Criticizes Party Member's Meeting with Former President Moon

Gong Min-jung, a lawmaker with South Korea's Democratic Party, has voiced criticism regarding a recent meeting between party colleague Jeong Cheong-rae and former President Moon Jae-in. Gong suggested that such encounters, especially during a heated party leadership contest, risk generating unnecessary controversy and misinterpretation among the public and party members. She argued that any perceived intention behind such meetings could undermine their impact, stating, "If an intention is read into anything, there is no emotion."

Gong, who previously served as spokesperson for the Moon administration, expressed her belief that most citizens and party members would likely share similar views on the matter. She noted that the meeting took place in a public setting, the Seoul International Book Fair, and that news of Jeong's attendance had already been reported. When asked how she would advise Moon's current staff if they inquired about meeting Jeong, Gong stated, "It is right not to meet." She emphasized that in a fiercely competitive race for party leadership, meeting some individuals and not others could inevitably lead to further debate, and there was no need to create such misunderstandings.
