South Korean man with epilepsy donates organs to four, giving new life

A 34-year-old man, So In-hu, who had lived with epilepsy since childhood, has given the gift of life to four people through organ donation. He passed away on July 1 at Jeonbuk National University Hospital in Jeonju, South Korea, after being declared brain dead. So In-hu was diagnosed with epilepsy at seven months old and spent much of his life needing care. His health significantly declined after a severe bout of pneumonia in his early twenties, confining him to bed for over a decade.

His mother, Yang Young-hee, shared her initial concerns about whether her son could donate organs due to his long illness. Upon hearing that he had saved other lives, she felt immense gratitude. So In-hu spent most of his time at home with his mother, enjoying listening to the national anthem and watching sports broadcasts. He would open his eyes to the anthem in the morning and smile brightly at the television during sports games.

His outings were limited to weekly wheelchair strolls around the neighborhood, weather permitting. His mother would bundle him in a sleeping bag on colder days. Though unable to communicate verbally, So In-hu expressed his emotions through facial expressions and gestures. He always showed a bright demeanor, responding to his mother's words with a smile, a smile that she said gave her strength through their years of care.

Reflecting on their time together, Yang Young-hee said her son gave her life more than she gave him life. "I am sad we parted so early and upset that I cannot see you. In-hu, do not be sad that you are not with Mom. You will always be in my heart. I was very happy raising you. I will not forget you. My longing son, I miss you so much," she said in a final farewell.
