South Korean middle school teacher sentenced to 9 years for assaulting 19 students

A middle school teacher in South Korea received a nine-year prison sentence for habitually sexually assaulting 19 students on 111 separate occasions. The court handed down the severe punishment for the repeated offenses, which occurred between March and August of the previous year.

The teacher, identified only as 'Mr. K', exploited his position of authority within the school, a place meant to be safe for students. He reportedly used specific classrooms equipped with soundproofing and lacking closed-circuit television (CCTV) to carry out the assaults. Investigations revealed that he disguised his actions as mere pranks and warned the students against informing their parents or anyone else about the incidents.

The crime of forcibly sexually assaulting students, exploiting the position of a teacher based on a relationship of trust within a school, the 'place of education' that should be the safest, is extremely malicious.

The court emphasized the egregious nature of the crimes, stating that the teacher abused the trust placed in him by his students. The ruling highlighted that the repeated and systematic nature of the assaults against multiple children made severe punishment unavoidable. In addition to the prison term, Mr. K was ordered to complete 80 hours of a sex offense treatment program. He will also be subject to a 10-year public disclosure of his personal information and a 10-year restriction from employment at institutions related to children, adolescents, and individuals with disabilities.
