South Korean minister to meet U.S. counterpart to discuss shipbuilding, trade, and Coupang

South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Duk-geun is set to visit Washington this week, marking his second trip to the United States in just over two months. The primary purpose of his visit is to attend the opening ceremony of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Center (KUSPC) on July 23.

The KUSPC, established as part of the 'Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Initiative' launched in May, will serve as a local hub to facilitate investment in the U.S. maritime industry. It aims to support workforce development, enhance shipyard productivity, and promote technological exchange by connecting government agencies, businesses, and research institutions from both countries. The U.S. Department of Commerce will support the center's operations and act as a liaison within the U.S. government, while South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will provide personnel and resources and coordinate with domestic stakeholders.

While shipbuilding cooperation is a key focus, the meeting between Minister Ahn and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo is also anticipated to cover broader trade issues. A potential topic of discussion is the ongoing U.S. concerns regarding Coupang, a major South Korean e-commerce company. Minister Ahn previously addressed the issue during his last visit, clarifying South Korea's position on the matter. The U.S. has raised concerns that South Korea's regulatory actions concerning Coupang, particularly after a data breach last year, could be seen as discriminatory towards an American company, a claim South Korea disputes.
