South Korean PM inspects drought damage in Cheongdo, vows preparation for worst-case scenarios

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo visited Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province, on August 8 to assess the impact of a prolonged drought and heatwave. The visit focused on inspecting the situation at the Unmun Dam, a key water source for the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, and a local senior center. "We must be fully prepared to utilize emergency alternative water sources," Han instructed relevant agencies, including the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Gyeongbuk Province, and Cheongdo County. He stressed the importance of close cooperation between central and local governments to manage water supply and address local difficulties. Cheongdo County has experienced severe agricultural water shortages due to the extended heat and drought, with the average reservoir water level at only 35%, significantly lower than the usual 79% for this period. The Prime Minister also directed officials to prepare for immediate emergency water supply measures, such as water transportation and bottled water provision, to minimize inconvenience to residents in the event of an emergency. "We must make thorough preparations, considering even the worst-case scenarios," Han emphasized, also calling for a review of the overall water supply and management system, including groundwater resources. He urged transparent and active communication of water supply information to the public. During his visit to the senior center, Han checked the cooling facilities and advised elderly visitors to avoid overexertion and utilize the center frequently to protect their health.
