South Korean police officer indicted for illegal arrest of suspect who surrendered

A South Korean police officer faces charges for abusing his authority by illegally arresting a suspect who had voluntarily come to the police station. The officer is accused of luring the suspect outside the station on May 22, then making an emergency arrest despite lacking the necessary grounds, such as risk of flight or evidence tampering.

Prosecutors allege the officer fabricated an emergency arrest report, claiming he "coincidentally discovered" the suspect during an investigation. This false report was used to obtain an arrest warrant the following day, leading to the suspect's detention.

During a supplementary investigation, prosecutors uncovered the illegal arrest. They secured testimony from the suspect about the unlawful detention and confirmed the officer's misconduct through phone records and police station visit logs. The suspect, who was illegally detained for 11 days, was subsequently released, and the arrest warrant was canceled.

The prosecution stated that this case highlights an instance of police abusing investigative authority. The officer, a 40-year-old sergeant at the Yeongdeungpo Police Station, has been indicted without detention on charges including abuse of power and illegal arrest. In response, the police station has placed the officer on administrative leave, barring him from duty.
