South Korean Politician Criticizes Party Leader's US Trip, Questions Expenses

A prominent member of South Korea's People Power Party has publicly questioned the expenses and optics of the party leader's recent trip to the United States. Kim Tae-gyu criticized party leader Jang Dong-hyuk, suggesting that despite the party spending approximately 200 million won (about $145,000) on the 8-day trip in April, Jang himself paid for his own hamburger.

Speaking on YTN radio, Kim implied that Jang's personal expenditure on a simple meal contrasted with the overall budget. He noted the significant increase in party membership since Jang took leadership, suggesting substantial funds from party dues. Kim questioned whether Jang's personal spending on a hamburger was a relevant comparison point given other issues.

With the party membership increasing by hundreds of thousands since leader Jang took office, even calculating just 1,000 won per member would amount to a considerable sum.

The trip itself was not without controversy. Earlier reports highlighted that the party initially announced Jang met with a US deputy assistant secretary of state, but it was later revealed he met with a lower-ranking official. Photos of Jang and another party official, Kim Min-soo, posing at the US Congress also drew attention.

When asked about the meetings, Kim Tae-gyu acknowledged the limitations faced by a minority party leader but defended Jang's efforts to achieve results during the visit. The party had reported the total cost of the "leader's delegation US visit expenses" to the National Election Commission as 203.8 million won.
