South Korean refiners seek Venezuelan crude amid supply fears

South Korean oil refiners are turning to Venezuelan crude oil for the first time in two decades as geopolitical tensions disrupt global supply chains. GS Caltex imported 110,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude last month, marking a significant shift in sourcing strategy. This move comes as the prolonged conflict between the US and Iran has created instability in crucial shipping lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

The re-engagement with Venezuela is driven by the need to ensure stable oil supplies. South Korean refiners, primarily reliant on Middle Eastern crude, had ceased imports from Venezuela after its former president, Hugo Chávez, nationalized oil fields in 2006. This led to a halt in trade, and facilities were subsequently optimized for Middle Eastern crude.

Other major South Korean refiners, such as SK Energy and HD Hyundai Oilbank, are reportedly exploring the feasibility of importing Venezuelan crude. The current volatile geopolitical climate, which has also affected shipping routes from Saudi Arabia's Yanbu port, necessitates a diversification of oil sources. This strategic pivot underscores the global impact of regional conflicts on energy security and the lengths to which industries will go to maintain operations.
