South Korean shipping company’s tanker reportedly hit in Strait of Hormuz

One of the two tankers hit in the Strait of Hormuz on May 31 reportedly belongs to South Korean shipping company Sinokor Merchant Marine, according to the Financial Times.

The newspaper, citing two maritime security analysts, identified the vessel as the Senegal Prosperity, owned by Sinokor, and said the other tanker was the Saudi-owned Sidr. The analysts cautioned that limited communications in the Gulf region meant the ship names had not yet been officially confirmed.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said on the night of May 31 that a tanker leaving the Strait of Hormuz had been struck by three “unidentified projectiles” about 30 kilometers east of Khasab, Oman. No casualties or oil spill were reported, and the agency did not identify the vessel.

The Financial Times reported that Sinokor did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the incident. A Sinokor-affiliated group later said the vessel appeared to be a tanker belonging to a separate group within the company’s wider corporate group. The incident occurred amid rising tensions around the waterway after the United States attacked Iran’s Larak Island, saying Iran was preparing to launch a rocket carrying sea mines, followed by Iranian retaliatory attacks toward Jordan and other targets.
