South Korean woman missing for months confirmed dead via DNA; police officer arrested for falsifying report

The remains of a woman in her 30s, identified as Ms. Jang, have been confirmed through DNA analysis in Jeju, South Korea. Her body was discovered after a police officer was arrested for allegedly falsifying her missing person report, leading to a significant delay in the case. Authorities revealed that the National Forensic Service's DNA analysis confirmed a paternal relationship, thereby identifying the remains as belonging to the missing woman. This confirmation followed an earlier autopsy report that also indicated the body's identity matched the missing person. The investigation into Ms. Jang's death is ongoing, with various possibilities being explored.

Forensic findings included a fracture to the hyoid bone, suggesting strangulation as a potential cause of death. However, investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the fracture occurred during the decomposition process. No other significant fractures suggesting foul play were found on the head or torso.

The arrested officer, identified as a corporal in his 30s, faces charges including dereliction of duty and falsifying official documents. He is accused of fabricating contact with Ms. Jang after her missing person report was filed in May, subsequently closing the case. The officer is also suspected of similarly falsifying the report for another missing person, a man in his 60s, whose body was found in July.

Ms. Jang's funeral was held, and her remains are to be cremated and interred on the mainland. The police department has stated that they are keeping all possibilities open as the investigation continues.
