Southern German Central Station Closed After Unknown Object Explodes

Augsburg’s central station in southern Germany was closed after an unknown object exploded in a passage and police found another suspicious object inside the building.

Schwaben Nord police said a major operation began at the station early Wednesday. About an hour later, they reported on X that “an explosion of an unknown object” had occurred in a passage.

Two people suffered minor injuries, according to the Augsburger Allgemeine. BILD reported that a hand grenade exploded outside a Turkish jewelry store and that an explosives-detection dog reacted to a waste bin. The paper said police were examining a possible connection to organized crime.

The incident disrupted road traffic and public transport and led to the closure of a road and part of the station. The discovery of the second suspicious object then forced authorities to shut the entire building and suspend all rail traffic.
