The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has expressed deep concern regarding the arrest and detention of Nigerian activist and politician Omoyele Sowore. The group emphasized that a nation's true strength lies in its equitable treatment of all citizens, including those who hold dissenting views.

In a statement, UNIEC's Director-General, Alpha Justice Ikpeama, condemned Sowore's reported arrest within court premises and his subsequent detention. The council stressed that all Nigerians, irrespective of their political leanings or opinions, are entitled to fair treatment and legal protection. "UNIEC Worldwide believes that in a democratic society, the rule of law, constitutional rights and due process must remain the foundation upon which all state actions are measured," the statement read.

Consequently, any action involving him or any other citizen must be handled with transparency, professionalism and respect for established legal procedures to preserve public confidence in democratic institutions," the council stated.

Consequently, any action involving him or any other citizen must be handled with transparency, professionalism and respect for established legal procedures to preserve public confidence in democratic institutions.

UNIEC Worldwide further asserted that democracy flourishes when diverse opinions are embraced rather than suppressed. "As elders and custodians of peace, the Council reminds all authorities that democracy is strengthened not by suppressing differing opinions, but by encouraging responsible dialogue, tolerance, accountability and respect for fundamental rights and freedom," the statement added. The council cautioned against actions that could undermine public trust in democratic institutions or foster fears of selective justice, reiterating that a nation's strength is demonstrated by how it treats those who hold different views.
