SpaceX plans to launch first AI satellites in 2027 with Nvidia technology

SpaceX is accelerating its ambitious plans for space-based computing, now targeting the fourth quarter of 2027 for the launch of its first satellites equipped with artificial intelligence technology from Nvidia. This initiative aims to bring data centers into orbit, a project spearheaded by Elon Musk, founder of the aerospace company.

Musk announced on X that SpaceX, in partnership with Nvidia, has developed a specialized system for space operations. He described the design as "significantly simpler, cheaper, dense, and lighter" than conventional data center racks. This announcement brings forward SpaceX's earlier projection of deploying these orbital data centers to 2028.

Nvidia confirmed that SpaceX will utilize its Vera processors to enhance coordination, code execution, and data processing for its agentic AI systems. These systems will operate from both large-scale data centers on Earth and SpaceX's future orbital infrastructure. This collaboration underscores a strategic commitment, as SpaceX previously stated its intention to exclusively use Nvidia chips for its AI infrastructure development.

SpaceX's financial reports reveal substantial investments in AI. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported a net loss of $541 million, though this was half the loss from the same period in the previous year. Revenue increased by 92% year-over-year to $7.814 billion. Capital investments in AI surged, reaching $15.828 billion in the second quarter of 2026, more than doubling the previous quarter's investment.
