Spain battles two major wildfires affecting over 50,000 people

Two massive wildfires raging in Spain have forced the evacuation or confinement of over 50,000 people, devastating more than 18,000 hectares. The Spanish government has declared a national emergency and appealed for assistance from the European Union.

In the southwest of Madrid, authorities reported that a significant number of residents were evacuated or confined due to a fire that has already consumed over 12,000 hectares. Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso stated that 20,000 people were evacuated. Strong winds, with gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour, are fanning the flames, causing embers to travel long distances and reignite fires beyond containment lines. This wind has been the primary obstacle in controlling the blaze, which originated in Villa del Prado and San Martín de Valdeiglesias and is advancing northward.

Authorities have arrested one individual and are investigating another in connection with the fire in Ávila, which has scorched at least 6,000 hectares. The suspects are believed to have acted with gross negligence while using heavy machinery, which was strictly prohibited. Difficult terrain, dense forestation, and adverse weather conditions, including winds of 50 kilometers per hour and high temperatures, are hindering efforts to control this fire. The blaze has already destroyed the Valle de Iruelas Nature Reserve, home to a significant population of black vultures, and is threatening the Tiétar Valley.

Concerns are mounting that the two major fires, one in Madrid and the other in Ávila, could merge, making containment even more challenging. The central government has deployed 1,800 personnel, including civil protection, security forces, and the Military Emergencies Unit, along with ground vehicles, aircraft, and helicopters. European aerial resources have also been activated through the European Civil Protection Mechanism to bolster firefighting efforts.
