Spain Declares National Emergency Over Raging Wildfires Near Madrid

Spain has declared a national emergency as a series of wildfires rage near Madrid and in the neighboring province of Avila, forcing the evacuation of over 10,000 residents. Firefighters are struggling to contain the rapidly spreading blazes, which have been intensified by adverse weather conditions.

The Interior Ministry cited the simultaneous outbreak of multiple fires, unfavorable weather, and the need to coordinate extensive resources from various public administrations as reasons for the declaration. This marks the first time a national emergency has been declared in Spain specifically due to wildfires, placing the response directly under the authority of the interior minister.

Scientists increasingly link Spain's severe wildfire seasons to climate change. This year, abundant vegetation growth following unusually heavy spring rainfall dried out under extreme summer heat, creating a perfect storm for fires. The regional government of Madrid described the situation as one of "extreme gravity," with active fires in Villa del Prado, San Martin de Valdeiglesias, and Almorox posing a significant threat.

More than 10,000 people have been evacuated from areas including Villa del Prado, San Martin de Valdeiglesias, Pelayos de la Presa, and Aldea del Fresno. Over 270 emergency personnel and 40 ground units, supported by military contingents, are deployed in the affected regions. So far this year, over 100,000 hectares have burned in Spain, nearing the country's average annual burned area over the past decade, making 2026 one of the deadliest wildfire seasons in decades with 13 fatalities.
