Spain Extends Nuclear Plant's Life in Line with EU Energy Strategy

The Spanish government has approved the extension of the Almaraz nuclear power plant's operational life for both its units until June 8, 2030. This decision, based on a favorable report from the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), modifies the planned staggered closure of Spain's seven operating reactors and concludes a significant social and political debate surrounding the facility.

Government sources stated that the extension was granted after confirming it is safe for people, ensures the security of supply, and carries no cost for citizens. The decision was made considering the extraordinary circumstances arising from the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine, which have created exceptional international energy market conditions characterized by high volatility and elevated fossil fuel prices.

The government emphasized that the extension is conditional, requiring the plant to meet stringent safety standards. The CSN confirmed the plant's correct functioning and adequate radiological safety levels, imposing technical conditions. The decision to extend the plant's life, described as "contingent," aims to moderate consumers' exposure to unforeseen peaks in fossil fuel prices.
