Spain and Italy have escalated a dispute over border controls, imposing reciprocal measures in response to a migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Hendrik Vos, a professor of European politics at Ghent University, described the situation as "mutual retaliation" and an "exceptional escalation logic." He suggested the actions are largely posturing and that the practical impact of the controls might be limited.

The conflict began when Spain requested Italy to cease its border controls, a request Italy denied, stating they would only reconsider after August 15 due to an expected new wave of migration. In response, Spain announced its own controls on individuals traveling from Italy, effective from midnight until September 7.
