Spain mobilizes 1 million euros in aid for Colombia earthquake victims

Spain has mobilized 1 million euros in humanitarian aid for those affected by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Colombia earlier this week. The first supplies are expected to reach affected areas from Bogotá on Thursday night, arriving Friday.

In this moment we are working to ensure that this aid is sent today and reaches its recipients tomorrow.

Spanish Ambassador to Colombia Santiago Jiménez stated that the aid was "immediately" made available to Colombian authorities. The funds are being organized for dispatch from Bogotá, symbolizing the close relationship and solidarity between Spain and Colombia during this difficult time. Half a million euros will go to the International Federation of the Red Cross for supplies, while 150,000 euros will support the Pan American Health Organization for medical materials.

An additional 50,000 euros from the Reina Sofía Foundation will fund medications sent from Spain. The remaining 300,000 euros will be used by the Spanish government for immediate local purchases. Miguel González Gullón, coordinator for the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Aecid) in Colombia, detailed the contents of hygiene kits, which include essential personal care items for a family of five for one month, as well as kitchen kits and habitat kits with items like blankets and lamps.

Ambassador Jiménez also noted that over 1,300 Spanish companies are contributing to the emergency relief efforts through financial donations, equipment, engineers, and satellite connectivity services.
