Spain: Officials warn winds could further fuel massive wildfires

Spain is grappling with a massive wildfire that has displaced tens of thousands and cast a pall of smoke over the capital. The country's interior ministry reported that 63,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes or remain inside due to the fires, which officials are calling the largest ever recorded in the region. Thick, gray smoke billowed into the sky west of Madrid, and the smell of burning filled the city center.

Authorities expressed cautious optimism as temperatures dropped and winds subsided on Friday evening. Francisco Martin, a government representative in Madrid, told journalists that there was a "real possibility of controlling this fire with a certain guarantee of success." He noted the decrease in temperature, calmer winds, and increased humidity as positive signs.

However, Martin warned that Saturday could bring renewed challenges. "The wind is expected to strengthen in the morning, and gusts will be quite unpredictable," he cautioned. Earlier on Friday, Carlos Novillo, head of emergency management for the Madrid regional government, described the fire as reaching its "highest point" and stated that firefighters were currently unable to control it. Two separate fires had merged into one large blaze, threatening to connect with another fire in the neighboring Castilla y León region.
