Spain PM welcomes World Cup champions home amid Madrid celebrations

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez led the nation in celebrating the FIFA World Cup 2026-winning football team upon their triumphant return to Madrid. Hailing the players for their historic achievement, Sanchez shared a video on X with the caption, "Welcome home, CHAMPIONS!" The footage captured the victorious squad, led by captain Rodri and head coach Luis de la Fuente, arriving in the Spanish capital to an ecstatic reception.

The team's arrival on Monday afternoon followed their dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over defending champions Argentina in the final held at New York New Jersey Stadium. This win marks Spain's second World Cup title, ending a 16-year wait since their historic triumph in 2010. Upon landing, the squad engaged in official receptions with Prime Minister Sanchez and the Spanish royal family, including King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

Madrid transformed into a sea of red and yellow as thousands of fans, many clad in Spain's iconic jerseys and waving national flags, lined the streets for an open-top bus parade. The procession route, stretching from Moncloa to the Plaza de Cibeles, saw supporters gathering from early morning to welcome their heroes. The public victory event at the Plaza de Cibeles culminated the day's celebrations, with the team greeting the jubilant crowds.

The decisive goal came in the 106th minute from substitute Ferran Torres, who capitalized on a loose ball following a cross from Pedro Porro and an assist by Nico Williams. Spain dominated the final match, enjoying 68% possession and registering 20 shots, including 11 on target, while effectively limiting Argentina's attacking opportunities.
